Is federal financial aid available only for U.S. students?

No. Many non-U.S. citizens qualify for federal student aid. The most common category of eligible noncitizens is “permanent resident” (someone with a “green card”), but there are other categories as well. Yes. If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, you may qualify for federal student aid that you can use to fund degree programs from U.S.-based academic institutions. Please refer to the Federal Student Aid website for more information and to complete your free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA opens on January 1.
